Provides compassionate service and respects the personal dignity of patients, public and co-workers in a spirit of cooperation. Evaluates, develops and implements individual Physical Therapy programs for patients suffering from the effects of physical impairment, disability or handicap in order to a) restore, improve and maximize patient mobility and independent functioning within their physical limitations/ disabilities, b) increases strength and decrease pain, and assist patients in learning and/or regaining skills needed in the performance of activities of daily life. Develops and administers/supervises programs designed to reduce the effects of residual physical impairment, disability, and/or handicap through the uses of devices, specialized techniques, work programs and others. Provides clinical direction to PTA's.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

Skill 1: Assumes responsibility for own educational growth and development. Utilizes time in the clinical setting constructively. Seeks opportunity to gain new knowledge (e.g., literature, in-service programs, etc.)Utilizes newly acquired knowledge in providing patient care. Requests opportunities and/or patients to provide new learning opportunities. Demonstrates a positive attitude toward learning. Assists in the evaluation of own performance.

Skill 2: Uses and interprets nonverbal communicating when working with patients and family. Listens attentively and maintains direct eye contact when communicating with patients and patient's family members. Uses body postures and gestures which suggest attentiveness, approachability and acceptance. Recognizes effects of non-verbal communication upon others. Uses non-verbal communication to reinforce verbal communication to elicit desired response. Detects patient's and patient's family members' reaction to the treatment situation (e.g. uneasiness, anxiety, embarrassment, etc.) Identifies discrepancies between communication and observed performance by the patient and patient's family members' reactions. Adjusts non-verbal communication to according to patient's and patient's family members' reactions.

Skill 3: Displays safety consciousness in the clinical setting with patients, self, staff and equipment.
Ensures a safe environment for patients, and/or identifies potential safety hazards or contradictions and takes action to prevent injury on a consistent basis. Observes patients and/or staff and moves quickly to help, if needed. Asks for assistance when unable to handle patients independently, either physically or when unsure of their program. Uses proper guarding techniques when treating patients. Demonstrates safe handling of patient care equipment while working within the established guidelines and/or program. Monitor's patient's response to treatment which may include taking vital signs. Supervises when indicated. Checks equipment for proper functioning prior to and during its operation. Familiarizes self with the facilities' procedures and equipment.

Skill 4: Establishes and enhances good personal and therapeutic rapport with patients and family. Greets patient by appropriate name and introduces self. Initiates and directs conversation which draws out pertinent history and patient's perceived needs. Explains treatment procedures, purposes and possible results in appropriate detail and patient's level of understanding. Maintains professional authority/control while meeting patient's privacy and rights. Conducts all patient care activities with respect for patient's privacy and rights. Allows patient and patient's family members to discuss their feelings about treatment. Listens attentively to patient's family members. Encourages realistic patient and patient's family members expectations.

Skill 5: Compiles with infection control principles and sterile procedures. Washes hands thoroughly as appropriate when handling patients, supplies and equipment. Familiarizes self with follows the aseptic/infection control procedures of the facility. Keeps "dirty" items separate from "clean" items and areas. Disposes of contaminated/infected supplies according to the facility's policy.

Skill 6: Demonstrates control over emotional response or reactions. Remains calm and able to organize thoughts and plans. Identifies and prioritizes essential tasks. Arranges for changes in schedule by communicating effectively with patients and other facility personnel. Works effectively with several patients at once. Arranges for patient's self-directed activity requiring minimal supervision when one-to-one ratio is not possible.

Skill 7: Uses good body mechanics while handling equipment and working with patients. Keeps center of gravity low, over wide base of support while handling equipment and working with patients. Places equipment in a position to utilize maximum mechanical advantage. Moves equipment without causing injury to self or damage to the equipment. Transports, transfers and treats patients with the least possible physical stress to the patient and self. Asks for assistance when the task cannot be accomplished safely by one person.

Skill 8: Writes concise, accurate and legible reports which are approved by the Physician. Writes legibly, uses acceptable grammar and spells correctly. Uses appropriate medical terminology and approved abbreviations. Writes proper notes within time limits and frequency established by the facility.

Skill 9: Interacts effectively with co-workers and other health-care personnel. Reacts in a positive manner to questions, suggestions and/or constructive criticism. Demonstrates listening skills (e.g. body language, verbal communications, etc.) Communicates information at an appropriate time and place. Respects the right of those in authority to make decisions and complies with those decisions. Demonstrates cooperation with and the mutual respect for co-workers. Maintains a professional attitude with professional and non-professional staff through respectful courteous behavior. Makes suggestions to co-workers in a tactful and considerate manner.

Skill 10: Communicates with health-care team to exchange information on patient's current status. Uses and interprets professional terms, lay terms, non-verbal and verbal communication appropriately. Initiates communication which is appropriate and timely. Adjusts verbal and non-verbal communication to each person and situation. Asks relevant and understandable questions. Gives accurate and appropriate information concisely and clearly. Respects time limitations of others by being prepared for discussions, conference, etc.

Skill 11: Performs patient testing designed to record an individual's muscular strength, muscular
endurance, and range of motion. Familiarizes self with equipment not previously utilized in patient treatment. Prepares the equipment and treatment area. Gives clear, concise instructions to patient about the correct use of the equipment and demonstrates the use of the equipment, if necessary. Monitors the use of equipment and ensures patient safety.

Skill 12: Teaches patients and/or patient's family members and others to perform or assist with selected treatment procedures and functional activities. Uses language and term appropriate to the age and background of the person receiving instruction. Gives written and/or oral procedures which are clear, concise and complete. Demonstrates the procedures being taught. Provides feedback and encouragement during practice sessions.

Skill 13: Applies therapeutic modalities in a safe, effective manner. Familiarizes self with equipment and/or checks out equipment prior to time of intended use. Arranges for equipment, supplies, and treatment area prior to treatment. Provides the patient explanation and instructions regarding treatment proceedings. Positions patient for proper alignment, support, and comfort, modifying the usual positioning to accommodate individual patients. Drapes patient to protect clothing and preserve modesty; yet with accessibility of the areas to be treated. Inspects area to be treated for contradictions or precautions in application of modality prior to treatment. Applies the modality according to established guidelines or with justifiable criteria for modification. Arranges to assist the patient in the event of undesired effects of treatment. Evaluates the patient's skin responses to the modality during and after terminating the application. Positions patient for further treatment or assists patient for transportation from the facility.

Education: Advanced graduate degree from an accredited academic program in Physical Therapy
Licensure: Current State of Missouri License
Other: Working knowledge of exercise, electrical and manual modalities Ability to make decisions on multiple different modes of information Working knowledge of current rules and regulations Basic Computer Knowledge
