Responsibilities and Qualifications

The Monitoring Technician is responsible for on-going surveillance of patient cardiac monitors and provides RNs and/or clinicians with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms. Reviews patient information to determine normal heart rhythm pattern, current pattern and prior variances. Works cooperatively as part of a team. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

 

Safety/Risk Management:

  1. Troubleshoots monitors with nursing staff and contacts Clinical Engineering as appropriate.
  2. Follows policy/procedure for MERS/ Sentinel event reporting
  3. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure.
  4. Complies with patient rights/regulations.

 

Coordination of Services:

  1. Orients and mentors new staff members. Serves as a resource for training and troubleshooting
  2. Maintains accurate census information.
  3. Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
  4. Prioritizes appropriately and utilizes good use of time.

 

Primary Aspects:

  1. Maintains ongoing, high-level surveillance of patient's cardiac rhythms and immediately notifies nursing/clinicians of any rate/rhythm changes
  2. Measures and interprets patients heart rhythm and documents on patient record per policy.
  3. Initiates and discontinues monitoring on notification of admission, transfer, or discharge from the bedside clinician.
  4. Performs clerical duties related to admission, discharge, and documentation of patient information.
  5. Keeps updated on monitoring system and maintains clinical competence.
  6. Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel.
  7. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.
  8. Seeks opportunities for continued learning

 

Communication Management:

  1. Answers telephone and communicates clearly when receiving information from units or providers. Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when delivering information about changes in patient rhythm.
  2. Develops a rapport and cooperative relationship with nursing and clinical staff and responds to questions/requests from healthcare providers.
  3. Accepts delegation of tasks

 

Technology:

  1. Performs unit specific computer functions.
  2. Reports computer issues as needed.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Qualification 1: High school diploma, G.E.D. and/or current Mercy coworker.

    Monitor tech course completion and/or passing score of 85% on monitor tech competency exam.

  • Qualification 2: CRAT certification within 1 year of hire.

    Other:  Basic computer skills. Attention to detail and ability to multi-task is essential. Excellent communication skills and ability to make quick decisions under pressure is a must. Requires at least 6 months' experience interpreting EKG's.
