Provide school-based therapeutic support, education, consultation, and resource referrals to schools, students, and families participating in the Mercy Kids in Schools program to assist with social and emotional concerns related to educational and social progress. Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with Mercy’s Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.


Responsibilities and Qualifications

1. Facilitate monthly skill building classroom lessons focused on increasing resilience.
2. Provide individual, family or group therapy for children who are experiencing problems in school, home, or community with an emphasis on early intervention.
3. Provide crisis intervention which is geared toward protecting the safety and emotional wellbeing of students.
4. Encourage and assist families in their pursuit of community services that may assist in the remediation presenting problems.
5. Provide staff and parent support and education in the area of childhood mental health and human behavior.
6. Consult with parents, classroom teachers, nurses, counselors, administrators, other school staff and outside agencies.


Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:


Required Education: Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related. License: LSW or LPC preferred.

Required Experience: At least one year working as a school-based social worker or counselor (elementary urban and/or Catholic school setting preferred).



  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents in the facilitation of their wellbeing.
  • Possess positive and effective communication skills, written and verbal.  Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.  Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure.  Perform the operations with like common and decimal fractions.  Compute ratio, rate, and percent.
  • Proficient at Microsoft Office 2010.
  • Perform reading, writing, and speaking at an intermediate level.
  • Must possess initiative, be comfortable working independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess intellectual, technical and human relations skills needed to work cooperatively with colleagues, parents and community groups in order to accomplish goals of Mercy and assigned schools.
