Responsibilities and Qualifications

Assists with all aspects of patient care as directed by office manager, nurses and physicians. Has previous experience as medical assistant and demonstrates proficiency. Ensures appropriate communication and documentation in Epic. Assists with general clerical duties as needed. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

 

 

  • Patient identification and vital signs: Escorts patients to exam rooms, verifying identity with DOB, taking vital signs (height and weight, pulse and blood pressure on every patient, temperatures if patient is sick or complaining of abdominal pain, oxygen saturation if patient is short of breath or complaining of breathing problems.
  • Rooming: Thoroughly reviews and updates medication, allergies, social history, safety, health maintenance (personal and family histories for new patients), and pharmacy preference in Epic. Orders/pends RX refills and health maintenance orders as needed. Performs pre-emptive POC testing based on presenting complaint.
  • Procedures: Performs procedures in a timely manner (i.e. POC testing, specimen collection, EKG, spirometry, injections, etc.), promptly documenting results/procedure in EPIC as appropriate and correctly labeling all specimens according to lab requirements.
  • In basket: Checks in basket for messages throughout the day, making sure all have been addressed at least once before end of day. MAs assigned to physicians call patient results and INR instructions the day they are received into in basket. Letters are sent out within two days of receiving.
  • Stocking/Cleaning: Restocks exam rooms daily at end of day in preparation for next day's patients. Cleans exam rooms according to standard work. Cleans exam rooms between patients, making sure new table paper is out, trash has been disposed of and previous supplies used have been put away before new patient is put in room. Replaces sharps containers when they are 2/3 full according to OSHA guidelines. Checks biohazard bags daily, removing as needed. Evening MAs carryout late night duties as directed on Late Night duties checklist.
  • Outdates: Checks all vacutainer tubes, swabs, etc. in exam rooms for expiration monthly, ensuring that all equipment/supplies are up-to-date and appropriate for use.
  • Scanning: Scans documents daily according to assigned daily quota. Devotes work time not needed for patient care to keep scanning up-to-date.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED. Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • AND two years’ experience or 4 years comparable experience as a medical assistant. Up to two years specific specialty experience may
