Responsibilities and Qualifications

Responsibilities:

 

Greets and checks in patients in a friendly manner and consistent with Mercy Signature Service Standards.

Evaluates patient chart and registration information for current address, telephone number and insurance information.

 

CLERICAL DUTIES:

  1. Sets telephone, as appropriate, for end of day.
  2. Pulls, files, sorts, distribute and maintain records.
  3. Enters appointments in the computer with appropriate information; e.g., lab tests requested.

  4. Prints labels, registration forms and/or other computer information as needed.

  5. Relays telephone calls to appropriate area or takes messages.

  6. Ensures the return message has an accurate telephone number and patient name.

 

SCHEDULING:

  1. Schedules future appointments for patient and informs the patient of any preparation needed prior to test(s).
  2. Performs proper scheduling of appointments. Reschedules appointment at request of patient or if doctors change their schedules.
  3. Monitors and schedules appointments from work queue in the electronic health record.
  4. Assigns appropriate referral to the appointment when scheduling patient appointments.
  5. Prints patient appointment reminder out of electronic health record at time of patient discharge. 

 

CHARGE ENTRY / BILLING:

  1.  Copies and collects all pertinent insurance information and secures signatures as needed for medical records.
  2. Data entry of hospital charges into charge enty.
  3. Makes payment adjustments on accounts with directors’ approval.  
  4. Researches and resolves problems with patients' accounts and makes all necessary updates or corretions as requested.

 

GENERAL DUTIES:

  1. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or director.
  2. Meets Health System attendance standards
  3. Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance.
  4. Observes universal precautions consistently. 

 

Qualifications:

  • One year experience in a clinic setting or two years in a public contact position
  • Education necessary to communicate effectively in written and verbal form
  • Must have computer knowledge, typing skills, knowledge of basic math, be able to use a fax/copy machine, and be able to greet patients and answer phones in a pleasant and helpful manner
  • Knowledge of business office procedures, medical terminology and insurance procedures beneficial
  • Medical office training beneficial
  • CPR Certification beneficial
