Responsibilities and Qualifications

Works in the Emergency Department to perform all functions associated with charge capture related to department charges in an effort to ensure the highest level of reimbursement for services provided. Reviews emergency medical records immediately following patient discharge to determine accuracy of documentation for each procedure. Works directly with physician and nursing staff to educate in proper documentation techniques to provide supporting medical record documentation to validate all charges. Enters emergency department charges into the information system. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.


  • Works with nursing and physician staff to improve documentation of care and procedures to capture accurate charges.
  • Follows guidelines for coding and documentation to ensure physician and hospital compliance.
  • Demonstrates knowledge base in emergency leveling and procedure coding.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of work practices in an emergency room setting.
  • Ability to comprehend test reports, procedures and emergency care.
  • Maintains a positive, cooperative working relationship with nursing staff and physicians.
  • Enters charges into computer with minimal errors in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to set priorities.
  • Performs several tasks simultaneously.
  • Accepts constructive criticism in a productive manner.
  • Exhibits willingness to master new work routines and methods.
  • Participates in development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental performance improvement.
  • Willing to adjust schedule/assignment in case of workload fluctuations or other departmental needs.
  • Demonstrates ability to make decisions with limited assistance.
  • Participates in education programs and in-services in order to maintain and exceed excellence in leveling and coding skills.
  • Maintains established hospital and departmental safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Recognizes and performs duties although not directly assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education: High School education or equivalent

Licensure: Credentials: RN, BSRN, LPN, RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CCH

Experience: 2 years mininum experience in nursing, coding, process improvement, or utilization review/case management in an acute care facility

Other skills & knowledge:
