Responsibilities and Qualifications

The C.S.P.D. (Central Sterilization Processing Department) Instrument Specialist, under general supervision cleans, prepares, and assembles general and specialized surgical instruments and equipment. The C.S.P.D. Instrument Specialist must be able to sterilize, and maintain the proper logs. The C.S.P.D. Instrument Specialist must be able to answer the telephones and dispatch supplies. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent

  • Experience: The C.S.P.D. Instrument Specialist should be familiar with all phases of C.S.P.D.

  • Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Must know how to operate washer disinfectors, steam, gas and plasma sterilizers. Must know all instrumentation prepared and assembled in C.S.P.D. Must know how to check the proper condition of all surgical instrumentation. Must know how to clean all items and machines processed in the C.S.P.D. Decontamination Area. Must know to properly answer the telephones and dispatch supplies to the various nursing units. Must keep all logs and records for sterilization current. Must know how to do biological testing of the sterilizers.

    Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Must have good motor skills and memory. Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to lift heavy items. Equipment Used: Amsco steam and gas sterilizers. Amsco washers and automated transport system. Amsco cart washer. Steris V-Promax, Steris 1E.
