Responsibilities and Qualifications

Under the direction of the RN or LPN, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient’s highest level of wellness. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team; recognizes the importance of group goals. Performs designated clinical procedures and non-clinical support tasks essential to providing care to the patient. Performs technical skills such as dressing changes, tube feedings, suctioning, catheter inserted after proper instruction has been given. Assists in unit operational support tasks or duties. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and mercy standards.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. and/or current co-worker of St. John’s Mercy.
  • Successful completion of Basic Skills I course and Basic Skills II course.

 

Responsibilities
Safety/Risk Management:

a. Demonstrates knowledge of and practices sound infection control techniques.
b. Assesses safety needs and provides for a safe environment: Fall Precautions; Restraint Management; Patient Identification; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies.
c. Labels and properly secures guest’s/patient’s personal property.
d. Adheres to hospital wide safety regulations.
e. Performs equipment safety checks and reports faultyequipment/initiates repair.
f. Follows policy/procedure for completion of incident reports.
g. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure.
h. Complies with patient rights/regulations.

Coordination of Services:

a. Assists in the orientation of new/float personnel.
b. Acquires adequate supplies to perform daily care.
c. Acquires, sets up, and properly disposes of equipment for special procedures.
d. Prioritizes appropriately and utilizes good judge in use of time.
e. Participates in QI activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care.

Primary Aspects:

a. Administers daily hygiene measures.
b. Performs routines daily activities: ambulation, passes trays, snacks, water, feeds patients, turns and positions patients, observes for skin breakdown.
c. Gathers and records patient data.
d. Performs technical skills related to unit requirements: trach care, tube feedings, foley cath insertion, suctioning, and dressing changes.
e. Performs phlebotomy skills, Sure Step Pro and Neonatal Metabolic Screen.
f. Performs EKG’s.
g. Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel.
h. Provides patients and their families with explanation of care and psychological support under the direction of the nurse.
i. Participates in the admission, discharge and transfer of patients and their belongings.
j. Applies knowledge of cost effectiveness without jeopardizing patient outcome.
k.Assures all patient charges/credits are entered appropriately.
l. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.

Communication Management:

a. Accepts delegation of tasks.
b. Communicates with other members of the HCT to optimize the care of the patient.

Technology:

a. Performs unit specific computer functions.
b. Performs clerical duties as needed (i.e., answers phones, monitors lights).
