    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Basic Purpose:

    In accordance with the Missouri Board of Nursing Guidelines of employment of nursing students and non-licensed graduates, this position description describes the responsibilities and restrictions of the nurse extern.

     

    General Statement:

     

    Prior to employment, the nurse extern shall provide competency skill lists from their learning institution and proof of completion of one semester from an accredited school of nursing or provide proof of graduation from an accredited school of nursing and has scheduled for the appropriate state nursing licensing exam. This program is for nursing students only, if a student leaves a program for any reason, they can no longer be a nurse extern.

     

    Prior to performing any nursing skill independently; 1) the skill must have been taught in thenursing program or 2) signed completed by a preceptor employed by Mercy in the orientation checklist. By checking off and dating, the preceptor insures the extern understands the care of the specific patient type, the correct performance of the following skills and use of equipment. The extern will be able to verbalize appropriate use of equipment and demonstrate or discuss how to perform technical skills safely, effectively, efficiently, legally, and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures (Lippincott), and standards of care. 

    Qualifications:

    Skills the Nurse Extern/Tech MAY NOT PERFORM

     

    1.Administer medication of any types by any route which includes topical, bedside medications, IV hep-flush, IV fluids, and blood products, change IV tubing, or hang primary, subsequent or secondary piggy backs.

    1. Initiate or Perform Admission Data Base, 24 Hours RN Assessment or Focused Care Assessment.
    1. In regards to central venous catheters which includes multi-lumen, PICC Line, and Implantable devices such as Hickman or port-a-cath the Extern MAY NOT :
    2. Access for any reason
    3. Draw blood sample
    4. Hang any type of fluid
    5. Change Tubing’s
    1. Hang, Monitor or Change Tubing on TPN Therapy, Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA), or Epidural Therapy.
    1. Participate in Narcotic Count or Wastage.
    1. Initiate Restraints
    1. Act in a Supervisory Position
    1. Take, Write, or Note Orders of any type from physician or provider.
    1. Develop or document on the plan of care.

     

    Additional Responsibilities

    1. Attends all Mandatory In-services.
    2. Maintain Current CPR Certification
    3. Adheres to all OSHA Standards regarding appropriate safety regulation and procedures.
    4. Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols with no documentation violations.
    5. Accurate complete clocking transactions.
    6. Demonstrate ability to work professionally with co-workers and function as a team player.
    1. Demonstrate ability to accept Constructive Criticism from Supervisor.
    2. Demonstrate ability to abide by all work rules.
