In accordance with the Missouri Board of Nursing Guidelines of employment of nursing students and non-licensed graduates, this position description describes the responsibilities and restrictions of the nurse extern.
Prior to employment, the nurse extern shall provide competency skill lists from their learning institution and proof of completion of one semester from an accredited school of nursing or provide proof of graduation from an accredited school of nursing and has scheduled for the appropriate state nursing licensing exam. This program is for nursing students only, if a student leaves a program for any reason, they can no longer be a nurse extern.
Prior to performing any nursing skill independently; 1) the skill must have been taught in thenursing program or 2) signed completed by a preceptor employed by Mercy in the orientation checklist. By checking off and dating, the preceptor insures the extern understands the care of the specific patient type, the correct performance of the following skills and use of equipment. The extern will be able to verbalize appropriate use of equipment and demonstrate or discuss how to perform technical skills safely, effectively, efficiently, legally, and in accordance with applicable policies, procedures (Lippincott), and standards of care.

Skills the Nurse Extern/Tech MAY NOT PERFORM
1.Administer medication of any types by any route which includes topical, bedside medications, IV hep-flush, IV fluids, and blood products, change IV tubing, or hang primary, subsequent or secondary piggy backs.
