    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Basic Purpose:

    In accordance with the Missouri Board of Nursing Guidelines of employment of nursing students

    and non -licensed graduates, this position description describes the responsibilities and restrictions of the Nurse Extern.

     

    General Statement:

    The Nurse Extern role is designed to introduce and incorporate current Nursing Students to the Mercy workforce and the hospital environment while serving as a pipeline for future RN's to be employed at Mercy. This program is designed to be flexible to work with a Nursing Students school schedule.

     

    Qualifications:

    Prior to employment, the Nurse Extern shall provide student transcripts indicating they have completed Fundamentals of Nursing from an accredited school of nursing and provide competency skills list from their learning institution. The student nurse extern must remain in good standing with their school of nursing while in this role.

     

    This program is for nursing students only, if a student leaves a program for any reason, they can no longer be a Nurse Extern.

     

    Overview:

    Under the direction of the RN or Physician, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient’s highest level of safety and wellness. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team; recognizes the importance of group goals. Performs designated clinical procedures and non-clinical support tasks essential to providing care to the patient. Performs technical skills, for pediatric & adult patients, such as: dressing changes, suctioning, bedside EKG, POC testing, obtaining vital signs, and transferring patients. Assists in unit operational support tasks or duties. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy standards.

     

     Some skills that may be performed by the Nurse Extern with direct RN supervision:

    • Use the Nursing Process to establish priority of care
    • Insertion/ removal of peripheral IV catheter
    • Monitor IV Fluids
    • Basic Dressing Changes that require NO MEDS or OINTMENTS
    • Naso Gastric Tube Placement, management and removal
    • Staple and suture removal
    • Tracheostomy care and suctioning
    • ETCO2 capnography set up
    • Administer Tube Feedings
    • Monitor patient receiving blood products for adverse reactions
    • Maintain a Positive Attitude and Influence with environment at all times
