    Under the supervision of the Respiratory Manager or Coordinator, The Respiratory student is responsible for providing cardiopulmonary care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies and procedures.


    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Performs patient assessment and proper documentation. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities as performed on patients of varying ages and ability to administer. (e.g. SVN, SMI, MDI, CPAP, BIPAP, PD, VEST, O2). Provides thorough knowledge of respiratory medications as they relate to various patients. Provides education to patient and family when appropriate. Communicates clearly with patient, family, physician, and staff. Provides proper documentation and assuring its accuracy.

    Appropriately organizes work by following established treatment times to organize work and deliver therapy within appropriate timeframe. Organizes work by prioritizing care and management of workload to efficiently deliver assigned patient care during the work shift.

    Maintains knowledge and skills of the various methods of oxygen delivery, oxygen concentrations as they relate to various patients ,including necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery. Performs O2 rounds and proper documentation.
    Performs O2 saturation studies, ETCO2, arterial blood draw for blood gas analysis and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure. Follows proper documentation.

    Participates in delivery of emergency care by recognizing critical situations and initiating appropriate care/response required. Responds promptly to code blue and other emergent situations as requested. Utilizes additional resources as needed to handle the emergent situation.

    Performs order entry functions, orders verification, therapy and assessment documentation and follows respiratory therapist driven protocols. Maintains a thorough knowledge of all departmental forms, flow charts, logbooks and their proper usage.

    Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, notifies appropriate personnel of any and all malfunctions. Follows departmental equipment sterilization and maintenance procedures. Maintains clean and safe work area.

    Maintains file of in-services, competencies, certifications, licensure, CEUs, tests, etc. Attends inservices.

    Education: Must be enrolled as Senior Status Respiratory student or a graduate of an Accredited school.
    Licensure: Missouri student license
    Experience: Completed one semester of clinicals.
    Certifications: BLS Healthcare Provider.
    Other: Clinical experience with patient assessment, SVN therapy, MDI therapy, SMI therapy, O2 therapy, invasive and noninvasive ventilation, and ECG. Interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.
