    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Overview:

     

    Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Maintains accountability for the provision of surgical instruments to the surgical team. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality.

     

    Principle Responsibilities:


    1. Follows confidentially and adheres to all policies and procedures.

    • Adheres to OR Service Standards.
    • Knowledge of appropriateness and effectiveness of established standards, policies and procedures.
    • Ensure Universal Precautions and infection control guidelines are followed at all times.
    • Create a positive environment for communications.
    • Coordinates Workflow by communicating to the appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
    • Prepare for assigned cases and needs that may arise.
    • Check preference lists according to procedure and specific doctor’s preferences.
    • Organize cases for the day to enhance room turnover and recognized supply and equipment conflicts.
    • Anticipates and prepares equipment, instruments, and supplies for efficient utilization.
    • Notifies appropriate personnel for equipment/supply needs.
    • Open sterile supplies for procedure according to specific doctor’s preference list.
    • Demonstrates sterile technique and aseptic practices.
    • Assist surgeon during surgery in a knowledgeable, efficient and courteous manner.
    • Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change
    • Performs activities that demonstrate proper time management skills and priority setting.
    • Handles stressful situations effectively.
    • Functions as a patient advocate.
    • Sound knowledge of patient positioning and associated devices.
    • Utilize constructive problem solving techniques and follow established channels for addressing issues, concerns and problems.
    • Treats mistakes by self and others as opportunities for growth, thereby creating a culture in which feedback is not only safe, but expected.
    • Makes safety practices a habit; adopts new safety initiatives as they are developed.
    • Communicates potential emergency and safety issues within the team.
    • Maintains safe patient care environment and equipment which minimizes risk, injury, and error.
    • Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.
    • Meet needs of customers and needs for the hospital by flexing hours.
    • Assists in the orientation of new staff members.
    • Routinely attend huddles and team meetings and/or is responsible for the information.
    • Assumes responsibility for meeting educational needs including mandatory programs.
    • Determine professional development needs and develops goals and a plan to meet them.
    • Sound knowledge base in principles and techniques to scrub complex cases.

    Qualifications:

    Education: Graduate of Surgical Technician Program

    Licensure: Or, LPN with license in the State of Missouri 
    Experience: Or, minimum one year experience in OR  
    Preferred Certifications: Surgical Technologist
