    Responsibilities and Qualifications



    Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care for the assigned patients. Coordinates the patient care in conjunction with other departments. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs vascular ultrasound procedures for interpretation by physicians. Provides the patient care essential to vascular ultrasound procedures. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

    Education: High school diploma.
    Certifications: RVT required for Vascular Sonographer II.

    Preferred Certifications: Registered RVT is preferred.



    Safety/Risk Management:
    a. Follows policy/procedure for Incident Report/Sentinel Events.
    b. Follows Confidentiality Policy/Procedure.
    c. Complies with Infection Control Guidelines.
    d. Creates a Safe Environment: Fall Precaution; Restraint Management; Patient I.D.; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies.
    e. Respects patient's/guest’s personal property.
    f. Adheres to hospital-wide and specific department safety regulations: Fire and Tornado; Environmental Safety.
    g. Performs equipment safety checks.
    h. Complies with patient's rights/regulations.

    Coordination of Services:
    a. Functions as Preceptor for new co-workers.
    b. Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
    c. Demonstrates ability to direct and/or assist with the work activities of department consistent with patient needs and staff capabilities.
    d. Identifies and resolves problems related to patient, families, physicians, staff, and equipment.
    e. Participates in quality improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care and/or reporting mechanisms. Evaluates technical quality of sonogram.

    Primary Aspects:
    a. Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting.
    b. Assures all patient charges/credits are entered appropriately.
    c. Documentation is factual, accurate, organized, complete, current, and confidential.
    d. Identifies patient education needs and utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs, documenting patient/S.O. response to teaching.
    e. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.
    f. Performs vascular sonographic examinations including routine and emergency procedures. Performs portable exams in patient rooms, intensive care units, emergency room and operating room. Documents findings for physician interpretation.
    g. Evaluates appropriateness of orders for examination. Obtains appropriate clinical history and documents information. Retrieves/prepares patient files. Schedules examinations and instructs patients in exam procedures.

    Communication Management:
    a. Communicates patient goals, objectives and changes in status to other health care team members and utilizes input to revise care plan for optimum patient benefit.
    b. Makes independent decisions in routine and complex vascular situations and informs appropriate persons of actions and results.

    a. Demonstrates competence in initiating and maintaining use of routine equipment and procedures.
    b. Demonstrates competence in performing diagnostic vascular procedures.
    c. Performs technical skills relative to area of nursing and vascular ultrasound practice.
    d. Assists in evaluation of new products, equipment, policies, procedures and standards.
