The Laboratory Manager is a leader and part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. Laboratory managers are directly responsible for leading laboratory personnel and operations while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. This position is responsible for all managerial functions which includes fiscal management, planning and management of lab operations, quality management and Human Resource management. The Laboratory Manager will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions. Mercy Leaders are required to exhibit Mercy Leadership Attributes.
Demonstrates stewardship of resources in regards to inventory, time management, and meeting productivity standards
Monitors productivity standards and supply budget
Develops yearly budgets to include capital, operations, and work load
Develops projections for future needs
Creates monitors to develop data to support sound business and strategic decisions
Analyzes data to support sound business and strategic decisions
Recognizes, explains, and resolves variances
Participates in facility and Ministry committees and initiatives
Plans, implements, and controls laboratory operations
Develops succession planning
Supports growth, standardization, and consolidation initiatives
Ensures adequate staffing levels based on workload
Ensures staff competency
Ensures accreditation, regulatory, safety, and environmental standards
Resolves internal and external customer issues
Engages, coaches, mentors, and delegates based on team member talents
Ensures established benchmarks such as turnaround time and performance improvement monitors are met.
Performs the full range of testing and reporting according to department policies and procedures as required.
Accurately performs and records quality control, calibration, and instrument maintenance as required
Organizes, prioritizes and completes work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations
Troubleshoots and resolves problems or unexpected test results, in a timely manner
Documents and communicate to appropriate stakeholders
Completes incidence reports as necessary
Develops and maintains new and current department policies and procedures
Communicates professionally and effectively with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, vendors and the public.
Demonstrates appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, internet, etc.)
Participates in all other laboratory functions as needed
Champions and innovates change
Works collaboratively with all co-workers to accomplish laboratory, department, hospital or Mercy organization goals.
Participates and leads departmental, laboratory, hospital and organization meetings as required
Maintains communication with leadership
Maintains cooperative relationship with Mercy Lab
Identifies and participates in the training and education of others
Orders, monitors, and maintains inventory of reagents and supplies
Demonstrates ability to maintain a calm work environment through the use of conflict resolution, encouragement, motivational skills and interpersonal tools.
Performs special projects as required
Performs other duties as required
Performs Accounting of Stewardship evaluations
Documents deviations from performance and behavior standards and develops and implements performance improvement plans in a timely manner in cooperation with Human Resources personnel.
Utilizes critical thinking skills and demonstrates fact based decision-making skills
Reviews and evaluates quality control in accordance with quality plan
Documents findings and implements corrective action
Demonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility
Reviews, evaluates and correlates laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures.
Communicates and documents critical information according to policies and procedures
Recognizes, identifies and engages in opportunities for process improvement
Ensures quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing
Ensures appropriate proficiency testing enrollment and performance
Ensure accreditation inspection readiness
Delegates and participates in proficiency testing
Complies with all organization, hospital and laboratory regulations, policies and procedures
Participates in collection and review of process improvement data
Ensures validation and verification of new instruments, test kits or other
Completes assigned projects within the time frame provided
Acts as a liaison within the hospital or organization
Actively participates in meeting accreditation standards
Creates materials for the training, education, and competency of others
Develops and delivers continuing education and competency to laboratory co-workers
Creates and coordinates process improvement projects
Researches new instruments, methods, kits, or other
Leads validation and verification studies of new instruments, test kits or other
Participates as an inspection team member as required
Demonstrates less than 2 errors, requiring patient chart revision, in a continuous 12 months
Accumulates a minimum of 16 CEU per year
Educational programs such webinars, on-line education, conferences, classes, etc.
Programs must be related to medical laboratory science, leadership or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital.
A certificate of attendance or other documentation of completion is required
Other developmental opportunities
Must be approved by laboratory management prior to commencement
Laboratory management will determine CEU award.
Completes mandatory courses on time

Education: Minimum Bachelors degree
Experience: Three years clinical laboratory leadership
Certifications: ASCP or equivalent of a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist or appropriate categorical certification
Other: Bachelor’s degree or higher Current certification as medical technologist/medical laboratory scientist or appropriate categorical certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent. If ASCP certification was achieved after January 1, 2004, continuing certification maintenance must be documented to insure continuous and current certification Three years clinical laboratory leadership
Preferred Education: Masters degree
Preferred Experience: Five years clinical laboratory leadership
