    Overview:


    Provides direct patient care pre and post operatively to patients from infant to geriatric populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the out patient surgical environment. Communicates with the surgeon and anesthesia provider effectively for optimum patient outcomes. Assists with the maintenance of patient care equipment and supplies. Participates in performance improvement activities. Gives final check and review to all patient information as accurate and complete prior to surgery. Monitors the patient and provides optimum, individualized care to the post operative patient. Provides individualized pre and post op education to the patient and at home care giver. Reports significant changes in the patient's condition to the surgeon, anesthesia provider and supervisor.

    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    Provides direct patient care in a personalized and compassionate manner utilizing the Nursing Process
    Successfully demonstrates proficiency of basic skills, equipment and procedures, including unit specific skills such as airway assessment and management.
    Assists physicians and anesthesia providers with examinations, procedures and other processes related to patient care.
    Safely administers medicaiton by following the extablished policies and procedures
    Uses the nursing process to identify care plan problems and specific needs
    Utilizes specialty nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
    Utilizes extablished protocols and meets predetermined goals for patients.
    Assures the timely and efficient delivery of care to the patient in cooperation with the other team members.
    Communicates problems to the interdisciplinary team.
    Monitor alarms are set appropriate to the patients age and status and are responded to without delay.
    Documents pre and post operatively in a manner which is complete, accurate and legible in all designated areas
    Completes the patient assessment when admitted or returning to the unit
    Assess and documents the condition of each patients according to department policy as patient's condition changes and the patient progresses to discharge.
    Completes discharge summery.
    Completes medication reconcilliation forms per policy.
    Completes consents according to policy.
    Completes flow sheets accurately and timely
    Complets surgical site identification according to policy.
    Patient education and response is documented.
    Charting reflects implementation of care plan
    Physician orders are noted and communicated and documented as appropriate.
    Documents medication administration verifying with EMAR and physician orders.
    Pain assessment and interventions are documented.
    Medication syringes are labled and secured.
    Communication skills are evidenced by.
    Verbal and non-verbal communication is concise, accurate effectie, and appropriate to all care givers.
    Hand off reports are complete, accurate, and documented.
    Communication is dignified and respectful to all customers
    Significant changes in the patients condition are reported to the charge nurse / Supervisor, physician, and anesthesia provider.
    Calls to physicians and anesthesia providers are appropriate with all information readily available for the report.
    Utilizes chain of command appropriately.
    Notifies charge nurse / supervisor when leaving unit.
    Assists in keeping noise level to a minimum.
    Displays a positive attitude
    Role models effective communication and behavior to all team members.
    Ensures patients needs are met and all supplies needed are available for care.
    Demonstrates cooperation and support as a team member working with ancillary departments to facilitate continuum of care and optimum patient outcome.
    Provides verbal and written instruction to the patient and home care giver before discharge.
    Answers the telephone and patient / family questions promptly and professionally.
    Will defer unanswered questions to the appropriate person.
    Actively supports Performance Improvement initiatives by following hospital policy and procedure and approved programs to enhance patient care and safety and customer satisfaction
    Reports occurrences and medication events to the supervisor assisting in filing appropriate reports to Risk Management.
    Reports adverse / allergic medication reactions to the Pharmacy, Physician, and Anesthesia provider.
    Adheres to Infection Control Policy
    Adheres to Employee Health Policy.
    Performs chart audits
    Identifies, documents, and reports concerns where improvement will enhance patient care and safety.
    Demonstrates behavior that is supportive of cost effective patient care.

    Prioritizes and utilizes time efficiently to complete assignments on time.
    Supplies are used properly and appropriately and charged
    Removes and returns discontinued equipment
    'Demonstrates work habits and demeanor which contributes to the efficient functioning of the unit.
    Flexes time to meet staffing needs of the unit.
    Assists in maintaining of equipment, supplies and cleanliness of unit.
    Reports to work on time
    Performs other work assignments in a timely and effective manner

    Provides age specific knowledge and skills where applicable. Works effectively with various cultures and ethnic groups.
    Uses appropriate resources for age, cultural and ethnic needs.
    Care is provided using age appropriate modification of procedure, assessment, and communication.
    Education is provided using age appropriate and physical or mental disability resources.
    Provides a safe environment of care for patients and all customers
    Identifies any safety hazard and provides prompt resolution and /or reports problems or deficiencies
    Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in National Patient Safety Guidelines (JCAHO)
    Demonstrates current knowledge in Emergency Preparedness Plans, Univeral Precautions, MSDS information and Electrical Safety.
    Enhances professional growth and development
    Attends education programs, mandatory inservices, and unit meetings
    Seeks out and utilizes education from professional journals and other accepted resources
    Incorporates knowledge obtained into practice.

     

    Position Qualifications:

     

    Education: Graduate of an accreditied registered nurse school of nursing
    Licensure: Current Arkansas RN license
    Experience: Minimum 1 year OR circulating. 
    Certifications: BLS certification ACLS certification
    Other: Basic computer skills ability to converse in second language helpful Excellent patient assessment skills, especially the ABCs of assessment.
