    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    The manager is responsible for the effective management of the day-to-day operations of the Pastoral Services Department (including organizing, scheduling, directing, and supporting chaplains and the department). She/he will also provide spiritual care as a chaplain. Working with direct supervisors (mission and pastoral services), the manager will give input into development for the department, including budgeting, educational needs, personnel issues, and evaluations. Works collaboratively with supervisors, other departments in the facility, systemwide initiatives, and the local ministerial community to ensure quality, spiritual care to patients. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values/charism, and Mercy Service Standards.



    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

    • Education: Masters in Theology, Ministry or related studies. Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and willing to complete four units.
    • Experience: Two (2) years of recent health care experience
    • Certifications: Working toward certification with Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC).
    • Other: Ability for system and collaborative thinking. Congruence with leadership competencies and the mission, vision and values of the Sisters of Mercy Health System Proficient with computer skills: able to use word processing, email, and computer-based charting. Able to facilitate groups and interactions between staff members and be supportive of co-workers in other departments. Effective verbal and written communication. Ability to work independently. Good time management skills and able to work under pressure in rapidly changing work environment, dealing with multiple concurrent priorities. Seeks continued education, knowledge of health care delivery systems and regulatory bodies, and performance improvement principles. Able to provide weekend/evening coverage as needed.
    • Preferred Education: Completed four units of CPE.
    • Preferred Experience: Five (5) years of healthcare ministry experience with at one or more years of leadership duties
    • Preferred Certifications: Board Certified Chaplain by either NACC or APC
    • Preferred Other: Must be able to motivate others and function well in a team environment Experience as healthcare chaplain and supervisory/ management experience Bi-lingual and/or cultural experience with specific patients groups served
