    The Vascular Access Nurse  is responsible for using the Nursing Process to meet the needs of patients according to professional standards of nursing care. This Registered Nurse has been trained and is credentialed to successfully insert midline catheters, Accu catheters, and ultrasound guided peripherally inserted catheter under the guidelines of an approved Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter education course.  Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    Is responsive to and addresses the need for peripheral central venous access for the
    delivery of medications & supplements.

    Accurately assesses patient/family care needs regarding the use of the central venous
    Plans care for the patient/family based on that assessment in collaboration with
    physicians and others of interdisciplinary team. Seeks help when necessary

    Demonstrates Mercy values of dignity, justice, stewardship, compassionate service,
    and excellence.
    Evaluates vascular access supplies & services offered with stewardship and excellent service in
    Maintains professional conduct with medical staff, co-workers, patients, and families.

    Effectively prioritizes time and schedule for the delivery of the vascular access service line.
    Implements or appropriately delegates care based on that interdisciplinary plan of care.
    Evaluates the effectiveness of care interventions, PICC Line as well as central line changes, access
    site evaluation, and teaching regarding care of all central venous lines.
    Renews nursing process based on evaluation.

    Demonstrates clinical competency in the successful, sterile insertion of all vacular access devices.
    Demonstrates effective venous access assessment with ultrasound equipment.
    Knowledge of criteria for patient eligibility  of consideration for a peripherally inserted
    central catheter.
    Demonstrates effective patient communication regarding care of the peripheral central
    line through yearly competency of skills and knowledge.
    Demonstrates knowledge of the peripheral vascular system in regards to complications
    of peripheral infusions through central venous lines. Maintains competency to address
    these complications and manage the patency of these activase administration lines . Collects data and is accountable for CLABSI rates, teaching and reporting. 


    Demonstrates clinical competency in cardiology/special radiology areas when
    Competent to provide cardiology/special radiology procedure service to the age of the
    specific population of assigned areas. See "Age Appropriate care for Pediatric,
    Adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric Patients" policy.

    Demonstrates effective critical thinking, creativity, and resourcefulness.
    Demonstrates effective communication and problem solving skills with
    patients/families, co-workers, and physicians.
    Maintains patient and co-worker confidential information

    Facilitates departmental integration into the larger organization.
    Supports departmental in maintaining regulatory preparedness.
    Actively participates in departmental and/or organizational wide committee work.
    Participates in departmental Performance Improvement activities.
    Demonstrates compliance with all work related policies

    Completes QI activities for the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter patients

    Efficient with all computer programs necessary for required nursing documentation,
    ordering lab and/or exams and procedures.
    Accurately documents the access site of PICC, insertion procedure, and final results of

    Assures that all equipment is properly stored, cleaned, and maintained.
    Remains current with new literature and equipment regarding peripherally inserted
    central catheters



    Education: Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing
    Licensure: Current Registered Nurse Licensure in Arkansas
    Experience: Minimum of one year intravenous insertion experience and completion of a course in Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter within 6 months of hire with a minimum of 5 successful insertions under the supervision of a credentialed PICC inserter and completion of competency checklist.
    Certifications: Current CPR Certification Completion of an approved Peripherally Inserted Central Cathter education course within 6 months of hire.
    Other: Fundamental computer skills Excellent organizational skills Demonstrates Mercy Values of Dignity, Justice, Stewardship,Compassionate Service, and ExcellenceIs responsive to and addresses complaints of or the appearanceof pain in patients. Annual performance of minimum fifty (50) successful PICCinsertions per year, or skills reverification
