    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

    Education: Graduate from Surgical Technologist program;
    Experience: or 1 year of current Operating Room experience.
    Certifications: BLS.
    Other: Excellent communication skills.


    Performs the primary function of a Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room. Maintains accountability for the provision of surgical instruments to the surgical team. Coordinates the care of the surgical patient with other team members. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and mercy service standards.


    a. Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting: Assuring instruments and supplies needed; Helps turn-over rooms efficiently; Scrubs-in in a timely manner (prior to patient entering room).
    b. Anticipates surgeon and operative team members needs in regard to care delivery, maintaining sterile technique and comfort.
    c. Sound knowledge in principles: 3 or more specialties and techniques of OR
    d. Implements appropriate interventions in routine situations, as when assistant unable to perform following: Helps physician drape patient; Holds retractor/scopes or suctions when requested by surgeon; Cuts suture under surgeons direction.
    e. Check and ensure integrity of instruments with circulator
    f. Knows procedure and/or utilizes preference cards to assure instrument and equipment needs are available so team can stay patient focused: participates in updating preference cards
    g. Utilizes downtime effectively; Restocks room; Plans for next day; Assists in pulling cases; Assists other team members as needed
    h. Demonstrated flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change: Meets call and back up call requirements; Fulfills holiday requirements.
