    Provides direct patient care to infant through geriatric patient populations. Addresses the psychosocial, physical, and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment.  Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously about patient condition.  Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory.  Participates in performance improvement activities.  Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met.  Maintains departmental equipment and supply needs, assists in formulation of capital and operational budgets in conjunction with Manager and Materials Management.  Coordinates with Surgery Coordinator regarding staffing and education needs.  Coordinates with vendors for any needed instrumentation.  Coordinates with Surgery, Pre-op, and Ortho/Neuro Office Coordinators to maintain schedule efficiency. Is responsible for daily operational decisions including assignment of duties to coworkers in conjunction with Surgery Coordinator and Surgery Manger. Is responsible for orientation of new employees to the services, JACHO- specific requirements, Quality Assurance and Improvement activities as assigned.  Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    • Acts as a leader within the ortho/spine service line. Takes responsibility for oversight of all daily operation of the service line including staffing assignments, regulatory requirements, quality assurance activity, customer service, and patient care and flow.
    • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical errors. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently. Provides patients and families with teaching/education, as necessary. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patient and families.
    • Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationships with coworkers for the benefit of the patient. Maintains professionalism at all times. Conducts oneself in accordance with Mercy Service Standards.
    • Is able to effectively perform all duties as a circulator and has a basic knowledge of scrub and assist roles as needed.
    • Utilizes initiative: strives to maintain a steady level of productivity/ self-motivated and manages activity and time. Completes tasks specific to ortho/spine and presents to assist in other areas of OR as appropriate.
    • Establishes priorities for nursing actions. Coordinates patient care needs with team members. Controls environment. Prepares for potential emergency. Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency or physically stressful situation.
    • Controls/ manages vendor instrumentation drop off and storing as well as allocation of implants and supplies.
    • Demonstrates a willingness to work in collaboration and values the input and skills of all patient care team members. Accepts direction from peers, team members and manager in a positive, cooperative manner.
    • Demonstrates a willingness to perform duties assigned; both primary and secondary; either inside or outside the ortho/spine service lines. Maintains departmental checklist and performs duties as assigned.
    • Utilizes and conserves resources. Uses equipment and resources wisely. Effectively charges for supplies and equipment used. Maintains stock in storage rooms as appropriate.
    • Ensures that the operating room suite is ready for the patient, surgical team, and the surgeon. Anticipates needs of the surgeon. Attentive to the surgical field during surgery. Assist with any instrument needs/ turnovers to keep surgical team efficient. Communicates those needs with lead tech in Central Sterile.
    • Completes records appropriately. Ensures documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures. Corrects any errors in a timely manner.
    • Demonstrates competence in performing counts as needed. Follows established policy and procedures for counts. Initiates and documents corrective actions when counts are incorrect. Effectively communicates information to the physician.
    • Responds in a timely manner when receiving phone calls from hospital staff or vendors in regard to current or upcoming patient procedures.
    • Performs other work duties as assigned.


    Minimum Required Qualifications


    Graduate from an accredited shcool of nursing


    Current AR RN license



    Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS


    Other Skills and Knowledge:

    At least 2 years of experience. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Basic computer knowledge.

    Organizing and coordinating skills. Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community. Advanced assessment skills
