Provides direct patient care to infant through geriatric patient populations. Functions in the expanded perioperative nursing role as a first assistant. Addresses the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care related to the surgical environment. Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously and as needed about patient condition. Assists with the maintenance of surgical equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement activities. Assesses operating room for equipment functioning and readiness, obtains supplies for individual cases and ensures all appropriate needs of surgical operating team are met. Monitors, positions and assists patient during procedure. Maintains departmental equipment and supply needs in conjunction with Supervisor and Materials Management. Coordinates with Surgery Supervisor regarding staffing and education needs. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards

1. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently. Provides patients and families with teaching/education, as necessary. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patient and families.
2. Functions as an RNFA including all phases of perioperative care:
a. Performs focused preoperative nursing assessments
b. Collaborates with other health care providers regarding the patient's plan of care.
a. Using instruments and medical devices
b. Poviding surgical site exposure
c. Handling and/or cutting tissue
d. Providing hemostasis
3. Postoperative patient management in collaboration with otherhealth care providers in the immediate postoperative period and beyond such as
a. Participating in postoperative rounds
b. Assisting with discharge plannign and identifyign appropriate communitiy resources when neded.
3. Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationships with coworkers for the benefit of the patient. Maintains professionalism at all times. Conducts oneself in accordance with Mercy Service Standards.
4. Is able to effectively perform all duties as a circulator and RNFA and has a basic knowledge of scrub, perfusion and anesthesia roles.
5. Utilizes initiative: strives to maintain a steady level of productivity; self-motivated; manages activity and time. Completes tasks specific to CVOR and presents to assist in other areas of OR as appropriate.
6. Establishes priorities for nursing actions. Coordinates patient care needs with team members. Controls environment. Prepares for potential emergency. Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency or physically distressful situation.
7. Demonstrates a willingness to work in collaboration and values the input and skills of all patient care team members. Accepts direction from peers, team members and manager in a positive, cooperative manner.
8 Demonstrates a willingness to perform duties assigned; both primary and secondary;
either inside or outside CVOR. Maintains departmental checklist and performs duties
9. Utilizes and conserves resources. Uses equipment and resources wisely. Effectively charges for supplies and equipment used. Maintains stock in CVOR, as appropriate.
10. Ensures that the operating room suite is ready for patient, surgical team, and the surgeon. Anticipates needs of the surgeon. Attentive to surgical field During surgery. Assist anesthesia during induction and line placement, as necessary. 10
11. Accurately records, handles and label specimens: demonstrates care of specimens.
12 Completes records appropriately; Documentation meets current standards, policies and procedures. Corrects any errors in a timely manner. Ensures proper documentation on hand before surgical case start (i.e.: H&P, Consents, Pre-op
13. Demonstrates competence in performing counts. Follows established policy and procedures for counts. Initiates and documents corrective actions when counts are incorrect. Effectively communicates information to the physician.
14. Demonstrate knowledge of basic hemodynamic principles and corrective actions. Understands set up, placement, function and proper use of invasive lines (arterial lines, Swan-ganz, CVP, ext.).
15. Takes call as required (see staffing policy). Takes accountability for being accessible while on call. Responds to callbacks by calling operator when paged and arriving in department ready to work in a timely manner. Effectively manages duties as a team leader, as necessary.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Licensure: Current Registered Nursing licensure in the State of Arkansas
Experience: 3 years experience in the operating room
Certification/Registration: Current BLS and ACLS certification
Other skills & knowledge:
Skills as an RNFA in the preoperative setting: focused preoperative nursing assessments, communicating and
collaborating with other helath care providers regarding patient's plan of care.
Skills as an RNFA in any surgical setting including using surgical instruments and medical devices, providing surgical site
exposure, handling and/or cutting tissue, providing hemostasis, suturing.
Skills as an RNFA in the postoperative period: participating in postoperative rounds, assisting with discharge planning.
Completion of an RN First Assistant Education Program
Experience: Cardiac and/or Vascular surgery experience preferred
Certification/Registration: CRNFA, CNOR preferred
