Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Experience: Successful completion of Mercy PCT course
Certifications: CPR certification required.
Other: Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to do heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds. Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment. Need to have a basic knowledge of vital signs skills, ranges and abnormalities as it pertains to vital signs. The physical demands described here are the representative of the minimums that must be met by an employee to perform all essential functions of the job.
Preferred Experience: 1 year GI Tech or comparable experience preferred.
Provides technical support in the preparation and recovery of GI lab patients. Cleans and disinfects scopes in the Instrument room.
Demonstrates knowledge of and practices sound infection control techniques.
a. Assesses safety needs and provides a safe environment. Adheres to hospital-wide safety regulations.
b. Performs equipment safety checks and reports faulty equipment, initiating repair.
c. Labels and properly secures patient(s); valuables (if assiting in prep or recovery room).
d. Follows policy and procedure for completion of MER (Mercy Event Reporter).
e. Complies with patient rights and regulations.
f. Respects at all times patient confidentiality and uses discretion when discussing patient matters.
Coordination of Services:
Assists in the orientation of new and float personnel.
a. Acquires adequate supplies to perform daily care in all areas of the GI Lab.
b. Acquires, sets up, and properly disposes of equipment for procedures.
c. Prioritizes appropriately and utilizes good judgment in use of time.
d. Participates in QI activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care.
e. Is in constant communication with the admitting staff, charge nurse, and prep nurses regarding patient arrivals.
f. Expedites instrument turnover to meet GI Lab demand.
g. Communicates instrument status as needed.
h. Locates missing equipment for the department.
i. Assesses GI Lab schedule and prioritizes work load accordingly.
a.Assists with the cleaning and disinfecting of stretchers. Applies linen to clean stretchers.
b. Provides patients and their families with explanation of care and psychological support under the direction of the nurse.
c. Assists in keeping linen stocked in all areas.
d. Assists with room turnovers as needed. Removes soiled linens and restocks rooms as needed.
e. Uses good judgment and maintains dignified manner in handling problems or complaints.
f. Assists in other areas as needed once training has been provided
g. Utilizes safe echniques or patient mobility
Assists patients from the waiting room to the prep area.
a. Proper attire is worn at all tims according to written policy.
b. Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to appropriate personnel.
c. Transports inpatients to and from the nursing unit when necessary.
d. Assists in bringing in family members to speak with the physician post procedure.
e. Cleans, disinfects and maintains endoscopes and other GI equipment. Properly handles and stores scopes and accessories. Performs biological monitoring, entering data in computer. Maintains and disinfects endoscopic washers and other cleaning equipment. Keeps the instrument room in a clean, neat manner.
f. Properly documents scopes, disinfectant and filter changes.
g. Demonstrates proper use of leakage tester. Monitors for proper working of equipment/instruments
h. Communicates an mechanical or clinical equipment problems to appropriate personnel immediately
i. Properly packages and sends items needing sterilization
j. Accurately labels and assembled items
k. Answers the instrument room's telephone appropriately, identifying him/herself without delay
l. Check PAR levels of all GI supplies, reorder, stock; assist ; annual inventory as assigned.
Exercises discretion in giving and obtaining information.
a. Refers problems to appropriate individual.
b. Keep manager/supervisor informed of any issues, problems or situations requiring attention or follow up.
c. Recognizes the need to assist other staff members during the busy times throughout the day. Asks what needs to be done and readily volunteers.
d. Constant communication with team members regarding patients.
e. Frequently access emails for department specific communication(s).
Attends inservices shared governance meetings and staff meetings regularly
a. Keeps current with infection control standards
b. Able to use all aspects of scope room cleaning equipment
c. Functions as a "super-user" for the automatic endoscope reprocessors
d. Able to access and log on to EPIC systems as needed
