Performs both routine and complex laboratory analyses including those requiring independent judgment accurately, precisely, and efficiently through the proper use of facilities, supplies, equipment, and resources. Involved in problem solving, teaching and training, and supervisory assistance. Performs related duties as assigned. Performs all assigned routine and complex laboratory analyses correctly as stated in procedure manuals; responsible for the recognition and correction of errors.
Conducts established quality control procedures for analytical tests and instrumentation; evaluates results and implements corrective action when indicated.
Performs and documents instrument maintenance, calibration, standardization and troubleshooting.
Reports patient results in an accurate and timely manner, consistent with quality control criteria and quality assurance policies.
Seeks supervisory consultation when indicated concerning unusual results, policy or procedural questions, or instrument problems.
Guarantees the confidentiality of patient identity and data at all times.
Teaches and trains new employees.
Participates in quality improvement.
Participates in continuing education to maintain proficiency in procedures, techniques, and instrumentation.
Interacts with System employees, peers, patients and visitors in a friendly and professional manner.
Maintains inventory control of reagents, parts and supplies.
Provides technical input regarding assessment and acquisition of capital equipment and maintenance agreements as requested.
Performs phlebotomy when required.
Assists in developing, reviewing, updating and writing test procedures.
Maintains compliance with all appropriate regulatory and accrediting agencies including, but not limited to, OSHA, CLIA, COLA, CAP, and JCAHO.
Observes universal precautions consistently.
Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate.
Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance.
Meets Health System attendance standards and performs all other duties as assigned.
Completes a minimum of 10 hours CME per year.
•12 units CE annually
•Completes mandatory courses on time
Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related science.
Licensure: Certification as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist by a national certification agency.
Other: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Computer skills. Organizational skills. Good communication skills. Ability to maintain accurate and orderly records. Equipment Used: Standard laboratory instrumentation.
Preferred Experience: Clinical laboratory experience preferred, but not required.
