    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Provide services in regards to prevention, recognition, evaluation, immediate care and rehabilitation for all active individuals and sports related injuries. Overall goal is to maximize safe return to activity. The individual will also demonstrate professional development and responsibility within the field of athletic training. The incumbent will perform related duties as assigned.

     

    Patient Evaluation:
    1.1 Demonstrates ability to interpret physicians’ referrals.
    1.2 Identifies rehab precautions, contraindications in common diagnoses.
    1.3 Seeks consultation from staff for advisement in more complex situations.
    1.4 Demonstrates ability to assess non-referred injuries and demonstrates appropriate judgment in referring injuries to a physician.
    1.5 Obtains all pertinent information from the patient chart prior to initial evaluation, including significant past medical history, present medical surgical interventions.
    1.6 Consults with physicians, other caregivers and staff for further clarification as needed.
    1.7 Obtains pertinent subjective information during evaluation.


    Patient Evaluation:
    2.1 Chooses, utilizes and applies appropriate evaluation procedures.
    2.2 Demonstrates technical skill and accuracy in performing evaluation procedures on various diagnoses. 2.3 Seeks consultation from higher level staff members, as needed, when performing in more complex situations.
    2.4 Utilize information from other disciplines for the evaluation.


    Patient Evaluation:
    3.1 Demonstrates ability to recognize general mental, emotional and cognitive status.


    Patient Evaluation:
    4.1 Discusses evaluation findings along with setting and discussing measurable appropriate goals with the patient based on estimated length of recovery for various diagnoses and documents these goals.
    4.2 For more complex situations seeks assistance from higher level staff members, as needed.


    Patient Rehabilitation:
    5.1 Reviews chart prior to treatment session and recognize information which requires alteration of treatment interventions.
    5.2 In more complicated situations seeks guidance from appropriate personnel. Incorporates data obtained into treatment session.
    5.3 Utilizes subjective and objective evaluation results to plan appropriate treatment program which focuses on strength, neuromuscular control, joint mobility, soft tissue integrity, pain, balance, coordination, posture, cardiopulmonary function, endurance, gait and functional abilities.
    5.4 Progress treatment in a timely manner.
    5.5 Seeks guidance with progression of more complicated patients, as needed.


    Patient Rehabilitation:
    6.1 Appropriately monitors physiological and psychological response to treatment.
    6.2 Frequently recognizes abnormal physiological or psychological signs and takes appropriate action.
    6.3 Reports these to M.D. and appropriate personnel. Seeks consultation for questionable situations, as needed by manager/supervisor.


    Patient Rehabilitation:
    7.1 Instructs patient and family in their participation with the rehabilitation program.
    7.2 Provides each patient with appropriate updated written home program on an as needed basis and at discharge.
    7.3 Involves patient and family as appropriate in evaluation, treatment planning and discharge.


    Patient Rehabilitation:
    8.1 Recognizes need for and participates in discharge planning.
    8.2 Includes recommendations for discharge. Consults with higher level when appropriate.
    8.3 Makes recommendations for continuation of off-site rehabilitation program following discharge.
    8.4 Seeks most appropriate and cost effective procedures.


    Patient Rehabilitation:
    9.1 Utilizes appropriate modalities that include but are not limited to heat, cold, light, water, sound, electricity, mobilization, phoresis, debridement, and therapeutic exercise with or without assistive equipment.
    9.2 Presents rationale for selection of particular methods or procedures.
    9.3 Participates in individual patient care team conference, clinics, rounds for purpose of coordinating patient’s plan of care. Makes verbal reports regarding patient’s status.
    9.4 Utilizes current information and concepts for patient evaluation and treatment.
    9.5 Follows St. John’s Sports Medicine MD protocols unless otherwise directed by outside physician referral


    Administrative/Organizational Duties:
    10.1 Has working knowledge of job duties, policies and procedures.
    10.2 Carries patient load that reflects productivity standard of the St. John’s Sports Medicine.


    Administrative/Organizational Dutied:
    11.1 Organizes schedule to reflect patient care priorities of self.
    11.2 Recognizes needs of fellow staff members.
    11.3 Rearranges schedule as necessary.
    11.4 Coordinates with others and asks for assistance when necessary.
    11.5 Arranges for patient care duties to be covered during absence.


    Administrative/Organizational Duties:
    12.1 Completes accurate and timely written documentation that includes initial evaluations, progress notes, home programs, discharge summaries, statistical reporting.


    Administrative/Organizational Duties: Quality Assurance
    13.1 Utilizes Center clinical procedures, protocols and forms.
    13.2 Makes recommendations for change.
    13.3 Completes competencies as presented.
    13.4 Can identify patient problem areas which indicate need for change in protocol, further studies.


    Administrative/Organizational Duties:
    14.1 Participates in department administration.
    14.2 Attends appropriate meetings when required or requested and is on time.
    14.3 Makes recommendations for new equipment as needed.
    14.4 Informs clinical supervisor/manager and/or director about significant developments in the following areas in a timely manner:
    14.4.1 Unusual patient or physician problems
    14.4.2 Equipment problems
    14.4.3 Incidents of injury of patients or self.
    14.5 Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
    14.6 Appropriately delegates responsibility to Missouri State University students and follows Missouri State policy and procedures for student participation at the facility.


    Teaching Duties:
    15.1 Provides requested in-service education to department members after each continuing education course attended.
    15.2 When appropriate utilizes researched data to supplement information presented and presents research for patient care as requested.
    15.3 Effectively teaches assigned coursework and provides student supervision in the Missouri State University Sports Medicine and Athletic Training program as required.
    15.4 Participates in public relation and education activities as requested by supervisor/manager and/or director.
    15.5 Explains the results of patient evaluations and the role of treatment and rationale for intervention to patient, family, and other personnel as appropriate.


    Educational Responsibilities:
    16.1 Identifies own learning needs and searches out educational experiences to meet these needs.
    16.2 Attends department in-services.
    16.3 Seeks information from other staff and professional literature.
    16.4 Maintains CEU as deemed by the National Athletic Board of Certification.
    16.5 Stays current on issues involving athletic training education and activities of the professional organization.
    16.6 Maintains current CPR certification according to department policy.


    Other Duties:
    17.1 Observes Universal Precautions consistently.
    17.2 Wears proper Personal Protective Equipment when appropriate.
    17.3 Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance.
    17.4 Meets Health System attendance standards.
    17.5 Incorporates safety, infection control and emergency procedures into treatment.
    17.6 Performs other duties as assigned.  

    Qualifications:

    • Education: Graduate of athletic training program from accredited college or university and National Athletic Trainers’ Association certification as an athletic trainer.
    • Licensure: Missouri licensure or eligible for Athletic Trainer.
    • Certifications:
      • Certification through the Board of Certification, Inc. Member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
      • Professional Rescuer CPR or its equivalent.
    • Other Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: This individual must be trained and capable of performing patient care and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed.
    • Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Clinical and/or Outreach Athletic Training settings. The individual must be very adaptable and willing to work occasional odd hours. There will be occasional weekend work and travel required throughout the year.
    • Equipment Used: Therapeutic Modalities, Thermal and Electric Modalities, Computer, Dictaphone, Cellular Phone, Therapeutic Equipment.
    • Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in athletic training or related field is preferred.
    • Experience: Preferred, not required.
