    Utilizes the nursing process to provide patient care. Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care for the assigned patients. Evaluates the over all effectiveness of care provided by other direct caregivers. Coordinates the patient care in conjunction with other departments. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and guiding principles.

     

    1. The RN will utilize the nursing process in perioperative practice.
    1.1 A thorough assessment of the patient’s data will include physical, emotional, developmental, social, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual information. The assessment will be documented on the patient’s record during the perioperative phase.
    1.2 Patients problems and needs based on the data obtained in the pre-op assessment are
    identified and documented.
    1.3 Plans and prepares for the case of the patient according to diagnosis, procedure, needs of the patient, and the physician’s preferences, using preference list prior to scheduled procedure time.
    1.4 A written plan of care is developed based on identified patient problems and needs.
    1.5 All equipment is checked for proper functioning before each use as evidenced by lack of problems. Assures all implants and supplies are available.
    1.6 Supervises personnel team actions to promote readiness and timeliness for surgical procedures.

    2. Implements nursing care assuring patients dignity and safety.
    2.1 There is documentation that the care given is in accordance with the written plan and complies with patient care standards as defined in department standards of care.
    2.2 Patient safety is provided according to department policy.
    2.3 The patient’s comfort, dignity, and psychosocial needs are met according to established standards of care.
    2.4 Family concerns are met by notifying them of surgery delays and by periodic reports of
    progress as evidenced by nursing record documentation.

    3. Effectiveness of services provided is evaluated.
    3.1 Assess and document the patient’s response to nursing interventions.
    3.2 Document and verbally communicate patient assessment to appropriate personnel upon transfer to another area.
    3.3 Uses supplies and equipment in an economical manner, using physician preference list and nursing judgment, without sacrificing the care of the patient according to Mercy philosophy.
    3.4 Patient charges are documented accurately.
    3.5 The endoscopy nursing records are complete.

    4. Assists in the care of equipment and supplies to insure availability when needed.
    4.1 Cleans the room and carefully removes equipment, according to infection control procedure, and to insure safety, after procedure is terminated.
    4.2 Assists and knows procedure for cleaning, sterilizing, and storing instruments and equipment, according to procedure to insure availability and safety.
    4.3 Assist with inventory once a year as assigned, and daily by reporting and documenting use of supplies and malfunctioning equipment, upon discovery, to insure availability when needed.

    5. Department procedures are followed for the protection of patient and staff.
    5.1 Proper attire is worn at all times according to written policy
    5.2 Principles of aseptic technique are adhered to at all times.
    5.3 Staff members follow established procedure for surgical hand scrub.
    5.4 Universal precautions and infection control guidelines are followed.
    5.5 Written procedures for care and handling of specimens shall be followed.

    6. Demonstrates effective and accurate verbal, written and electronic communication.
    6.1 Creates a positive climate for communications.
    6.2 Takes ownership in resolving conflicts appropriately in the work place.
    6.2 Maintains the confidentiality of patient, staff, and hospital information from written, verbal,
    electronic sources.
    6.3 Communication is timely, accurate, concise, complete, and appropriate.
    6.4 Utilizes constructive problem solving techniques to promote change and deal with issues.
    6.5 Follow established channels for addressing issues, concerns, and problems.
    6.6 Documentation of the Nursing Process is completed according to organizational policies and
    procedures.
    6.7 Maintains relevant knowledge of hospital forms, and completes in a timely, accurate and complete manner. (i.e. Quality Improvement reports, Patient care documentation forms, co-worker/patient incident reports, etc.)
    6.8 Actively participates in achieving units patient satisfaction goal.

    7. Participates in unit and organizational activities.
    7.1 Participates in Process Improvement activities such as data collection, in-services, and meetings as appropriate and required.
    7.2 Participates in a hospital committee, special project or service (i.e. preceptor to student or new co-worker, care management) as requested.

    8. Demonstrates effective patient safety techniques.
    8.1 Attends all mandatory in-services.
    8.2 Complies with all organizational policies, procedures and protocols with no documented
    violations.
    8.3 Maintains current certification in CPR.
    8.4 Complies with JCAHO patient safety goals. Adheres to OSHA standards regarding
    appropriate safety regulations and procedures.
    8.5 Completes orientation skills check list and submits to Nurse Clinician within the first 6 months of employment.
    8.6 Complies with medication administration as per hospital policies and procedures.
    8.7 Performs patient hand offs utilizing patient safety tools (SBAR, Report at Bedside, etc.)
    both from shift-to-shift and interdepartmentally.
    8.8 Accurately completes clocking transactions.

    9. Demonstrates professional conduct and development.
    9.1 Uses current knowledge achieved through research, evidence based practice or
    educational activities to enhance or improve clinical practice or patient care.
    9.2 Establishes goals and objectives with each annual performance appraisal, and provides
    evidence for goal attainment from previous evaluation period.
    9.3 Maintains hospital property and the hospital environment in a safe, clean and intact
    condition per facility policy and procedure.
    9.4 Maintains knowledge base required to provide professional standard of care.
    The nurse will be responsible for individual professional growth and development, demonstrating that growth by: (1) ability to care for more complex patients and daily assignments; (2) ability to care for more complex patient care issues and consistently act as a resource person for colleagues; and (3) effectively serve as role models, and/or preceptors

     

    Position Qualifications:

    • We require a nursing degree from an accredited school.
    • You’ll also need a current RN license in our state.
    • Basic life support training should be completed in 90 days with advanced training required at certain intervals.
