    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:


    Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Current Nursing student that has completed coursework in Fundamentals of Nursing and /or demonstrates competency in job description responsibilities . Applicant must provide documentation from school that coursework has been completed. Current nursing students with an active CNA license will meet the requirements for this position.

    A one page essay explaining why you want to be a part of this program and a part of Mercy.  

    Submit completion of your nursing fundamentals course.

    Submit Nursing Skills Checklist sent by recruiter. 
    Licensure: None required
    Experience: Entry level.
    Certifications: CPR
    Other: Regular attendance on the job during the required hours, including being on time for the start of required shifts is essential. The nurse extern must work at least 16 hours per month to maintain employment. Enrollment in nursing school is mandatory to maintain employment as a nurse extern.
    Preferred Experience: Patient care experience preferred.


    Under the direction of the Licensed Nurse, performs tasks and activities related to patient care to an assigned group of patients. Provide care for patients in accordance with age specific needs; provide care in accordance with any identifiable cultural diversity needs (such religions, lifestyles, beliefs, physical capabilities and cultures); provide care for patients by assuring effective pain interventions as allowed by their work certification; report and assist any patient that prevents with evidence of abuse and/or neglect; and supports the mission of Mercy. Coworkers are expected to abide by Mercy safety and infection control policies to maintain a safe environment for patients and coworkers.


    Demonstrates competence in providing fundamental care to patients. Obtains patient vital signs and reports any abnormalities to the patient's nurse and/or Charge Nurse/Team Leader.

    Responds to call lights promptly.

    Demonstrates compliance by completing patient safety rounds and reporting any issued to the Charge Nurse/Team Leader.

    Documents care given as appropriate. Documents vital signs, intake and output, CBGs, height, weight and Foley care.

    Delivers meals/snacks and documents percent consumed. Collects meal trays.

    Demonstrates commitment to quality patient care.

    Maintains effective communication through appropriate utilization of the chain of communication. Notifies Charge Nurse/Team Leader of any changes in patient condition.

    Demonstrates appropriate use of time and resources.

    Demonstrates responsibility and accountability in the growth and development of self and others. Takes responsibility for reading and understanding posted memo's, minutes and communications.

    Maintains a clean, safe environment for patients, families and coworkers by following established guidelines.

    Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
