The Clinical Documentation Specialist (CDS) reviews inpatient medical records while patients are still in-house (concurrent review) for proper documentation. This review includes new admissions to the facility as well as re-reviews every two to three days until the patients are discharged. The Clinical Documentation Specialist communicates with clinicians and physicians to ensure timely and accurate documentation and provides training and education as needed. The CDS will also perform focused reviews at the discretion of the Manager.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN, BSRN) – preferred RN with acute care clinical experience or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management
Licensure: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN, BSRN) with the State of Oklahoma or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management.
Experience: Prefer 2 years experience as a clinical documentation specialist.
Certifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (RN, BSRN) – preferred RN with acute care clinical experience or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management
Other: • At a minimum, two years experience in nursing, coding, process improvement, or utilization review/case management in an acute care facility. • Working knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding principles and guidelines or willingness to obtain this knowledge. • Working knowledge of federal, state, and payer-specific regulations and policies pertaining to documentation, coding, and reimbursement or willingness to obtain this knowledge. • Effective interpersonal skills in order to interact effectively with all levels of hospital personnel. • Organization and prioritization skills. • Effective written and verbal communications skills. • Critical thinking / Analytical skills. • Basic computer skills, experience in using spreadsheets. • Strong managerial, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
