    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:


    Education: High school diploma, G.E.D. and/or current employee at St. John’s.

    Experience: Previous medical experience as nurse’s aide, CNA, medical assistance or EMT.

    Other: Position requires ability to do a variety of skills.


    Utilizes the nursing process to provide patient care. Maintains professional accountability for provision of patient care for the assigned patients. Provides direct patient care according to the established primary care standards under the direct supervision of a RN or LPN. Coordinates the patient care in conjunction with other departments. Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and mercy standards.


    a. Bedside care; assists with patient comfort and hygiene needs.
    b. Skin/circulatory care; monitors skin and circulatory status; repositions frequently based on evaluation.
    c. Vital sign monitoring; demonstrates knowledge of normal vital signs with appropriate intervention.
    d. Documentation; records on the flow-sheet in a legible manner.
    e. Nutrition and Fluid management; maintains intake and output; encourages fluids appropriately and maintains restrictions when ordered; reports major discrepancies; assists with feeding of patients; delivers and assists with snacks.
    f. Promotion of patient activity and self care; assist with transport of patients using gait belt; assist with ambulation of patients using gait belt.
    g. Elimination Management; implementing plan of care; document on flow record.
    h. Restorative Care; intervenes to provide or assist with routine activities of daily living; provides assistive sensory and mobility devices to optimize self care.
    I. Physical Promotion; intervenes to promote comfort using alternative methodologies; assist with assessment of pain level and communicates appropriately.
    j. Preservation of cognitive function at optimal level; orientation or validation to person, place and time; support self-care decisions.
    k. Environmental management; straightens room and maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for patient activity.
