    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:

     

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience: More than three months, but less than one year experience required.


    Certifications: BLS

     

    Using sterile techniques, prepares delivery rooms for C-section cases; surgically assists physicians with procedures and functions effectively in obstetrical emergencies. Responsible for the sterilization and maintenance of all sterile equipment. Prepares and turns over delivery rooms after delivery. Assists with patient care, including phlebotomy/Sure Step flex and participating in the recovery phase of delivered patients. Assists with the collection and transport of specimens. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, guiding principles and mercy standards.

     

    Safety/Risk Management
    a. Adheres to Counting Policy: Instruments; Narcotics; Sponges
    b. Follows policy/procedure for Incident Report/ Sentinel Events.
    c. Follows Confidentiality Policy/Procedure.
    d. Complies with Infection Control Guidelines.
    e. Creates a Safe Environment: Fall Precaution; Restraint Management; Patient I.D.; Unit/Departmental Specific Policies.
    f. Respects patient/guest’s personal property.
    g. Adheres to hospital wide and specific department safety regulations: Fire and Tornado; Environmental Safety
    h. Performs equipment safety checks.
    i. Complies with patients rights/regulations.

     

    Coordination of Services
    a. Participates in activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care and/or reporting mechanisms.
    b. Participates in unit’s formal QI program.
    c. Prioritizes appropriately and utilizes good judgment in use of time.
    d. Accepts delegation of tasks.
    e. Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures, maintains control and efficiency in routine and/or difficult situations.
    f. Functions as preceptor for OBT/PCA.

    Primary Aspects
    a. Administers hygiene measures, including but not limited to bathing, mouth and skin care after delivery.
    b. Participates in admission, discharge and transfer of patients and their belongings. Orients patient to the environment. Completes necessary documentation (i.e., admission form, RR form).
    c. Performs clerical duties as necessary (i.e., answers telephones, monitors call lights, displays working knowledge of selected computer functions).
    d. Sets up sterile delivery instrument tables and rotates for maximum utilization.
    e. Handles soiled instruments and sterile supplies appropriately. (Uses steam autoclave appropriately and prepares soiled instruments for Central Service pick-up.)
    f. Transports properly labeled specimens to lab in a timely manner.
    g. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change. Accepts and completes special assignments as directed.

    Communication Management
    a. Provides patients and their families with explanations of care and psychological support under the direction of the nurse.
    b. Observes changes or unusual occurrences in patient condition and reports them immediately to the appropriate personnel.
    c. Notifies unit secretary of additional procedures and use of supplies.

     

    Technology
    a. Sets up room prior to case following departmental procedures. Checks spotlights and suction canister, gathers all needed supplies and sets up tables using sterile technique.
    b. Functions effectively as a scrub technician. Responsible for maintaining sterile technique, passing instruments, accurate sponge and needle counts, specimen collection and conservation of supplies.
    c. Upon completion of case, cleans up room according to established guidelines. Collects all instruments and suction canister and removes, assists in collection and removal of all trash and linen.
    d. Follows established guidelines for room preparation. Upon patient transfer, removes all linen, trash and equipment, collects placenta and monitor tracings and places in appropriate locations.
    e. Sets up room replacing all needed supplies (clean linen, instrument table).
    f. Demonstrates proficiency in clinical skills related to insertion, removal and care of foley and intermittent catheters.
    g. Demonstrates proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including Sure Step flex,
    labeling specimens, computer functions, and transporting specimens to laboratory.
