The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist is part of the provider care team who helps with diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patient conditions through the use of technical and scientific knowledge. This position is responsible for accurate, precise, and timely performance of laboratory tests. Medical Technologists/Medical Laboratory Scientists evaluate and report test results while assuring compliance and meeting all regulatory requirements consistent with the quality of a World Class Laboratory. The Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with Mercy Signature Service in all internal and external customer interactions.
Performs various chemical, hematological, microscopic and/or bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Responsible for accurate and timely analysis. Works under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director.
Performs waived, moderate, and highly complex chemical, hematological, bacteriological, immunological and or immunohematological tests as requested by the clients' physician and authorized by the Laboratory Medical Director.
1.1. Completes from 10 -30 tests per day with no more than 5 reported errors per month.
1.2. Completes and reports STAT tests within 1/2 to 3/4 hour (according to type of test) of collection 95-98% of the time. (95% will be scored as a 5, 93% a 4, 90% a 3.)
1.3. Early AM (morning) testing completed by 0730 95-98% of the time. (95% will be scored a 5, 93% a 4, 90% a 3.)
1.4. Performs only moderate and high complexity tests as authorized by the Medical Director.
1.5. Follows the written Laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
1.6. Assists phlebotomists and Laboratory Technicians with collection of blood samples as needed on a daily basis.
1.7. Answers the phone if needed.
1.8. Enters client data into computer as needed on a daily basis with 98% accuracy.
Responsible for monitoring quality control in section of the laboratory where assigned.
2.1. Performs quality control tests with the frequency indicated by the written procedures 98% of the time.
2.2. Evaluates quality controls on a daily basis. Determines whether they meet the established guidelines. Documents acceptability. Takes and documents corrective action if needed.
2.3. When corrective action is needed, does not allow tests to be reported.
Assures Quality results of laboratory tests by three of the following methods and 3.8.
3.1. Reviews or revises at least one test procedure as assigned per month.
3.2. Provides orientation to testing personnel as assigned per month.
3.3. Performs one instrument calibration per month.
3.4. Performs one monthly or weekly maintenance on an instrument per month.
3.5. Collaborates with Laboratory Director, Laboratory manager/and or Pathologist in planning a Quality assurance monitor for his/her assigned section per year.
3.6. Performs one non routine procedure per month as described in assigned section.
3.7. Evaluates and recommends new instrumentation or procedures as assigned.
3.8. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting test results and corrects
the problem or reports to the technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Performs required daily maintenance on laboratory instruments.
4.1. Performs maintenance on instruments according to posted schedules.
4.2. Documents maintenance performed.
Participates in Laboratory Exposure to blood borne pathogens plan.
5.1. Cleans up spills with 10% Clorox or equivalent bactericidal and veridical agent.
5.2. Cleans up work area on arrival or upon leaving the area.
5.3. Follows established guidelines according to the risk assessment task list for protection from bloodborne pathogens.
Supervises testing personnel.
6.1. Provides day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performances.
6.2. Is accessible to testing personnel on-site or by telephone as requested by Technical Supervisor or Director.
Performs miscellaneous job functions as assigned.

Education: Associates degree from an accredited 2 year laboratory program or equivalent
Experience: Associates degree from an accredited 2 year laboratory program or equivalent
Certifications: Certification as Medical Technologist, Chemist, Hematologist, Microbiologist, or Blood Bank.
