    Responsibilities and Qualifications


    The primary responsibility of this position is to coordinate and oversee the surgical activities, equipment, education and quality improvement parameters for the designated specialty. This shall be consistent with established policies/procedures and standards of practice, the goals of Mercy's Health System, the philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, the Nurse Practice Act, and the Employee Code of Conduct. Performs related duties as assigned. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.



    Organizes personnel education/orientation and serves as a clinical resource for the designated specialty in concert with the Education Coordinators and in consultation with the Specialty Supervisors, OR Managers and/or Director of Perioperative Services.

    Directs personnel on a day-to-day basis in carrying out the overall approved specialty plan. Assisting with decontamination personnel and instrument techs with turn over of instrumentation and instrument repairs. Facilitating flow of cases with movement of equipment, instruments and supplies.

    Controls available resources to promote an environment supportive of cost effective quality patient care. Assisting as assigned with capital request needs.

    Inservices of specialty equipment to specialty staff.
    Functions in a coordinator position in accordance with established policies and procedures and performs additional duties as directed.

    Demonstrates and promotes effective, concise and appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication.

    Assumes responsibility for continuing professional nursing growth and development in his/her specialty area.

    Establishes, implements and evaluates quality improvement parameters for the designated specialty after consultation with the Specialty Supervisor, OR Manager and/or Director of Perioperative Services.

    Demonstrates and promotes consistent, appropriate work habits and demeanor which contribute to the effective functioning of the designated specialty, the Department of Surgery, and the Health Center.

    Wears proper personal protective equipment when appropriate.
    Wears clothing and Health System badge consistent with dress code, and attends to personal hygiene to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance. Consistently observes universal precautions.

    Meets Health System attendance standards.
    Any other duties as assigned.
    Assisting with or maintaining specialty preference cards. Communicating surgeon supply requests to specialty supervisor and collaborating with material.
    Interacting with other Departments in a positive customer service manner. Represents Periopertive Services in a positive light reflective of exceptional customer service and meeting mercy service standards.



    Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:


    Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
    Experience: Ophthalmology or eye experience preferred.
    Certifications: BLS certification beneficial.
    Other: Skills, knowledge and abilities: Working conditions, mental and physical requirements: Must be able to multi-task effectively. Requires the individual to be self motivated and be able to work independently with minimal direct supervision. Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: May be required to work differing schedules, shifts, days of week, or work frequency according to departmental requirements. Stand and walk most of the time on duty. Lift and push equipment. Lift patients and push patients on stretchers, and on hospital beds and/or surgical tables. Usually work in the air-conditioned environment of the restricted and controlled surgical suite.
