    Responsibilities and Qualifications

    Assists with all aspects of patient care as directed by office manager, nurses and physicians. Has previous experience as medical assistant and demonstrates proficiency. Ensures appropriate communication and documentation in Epic. Assists with general clerical duties as needed. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.


    Patient identification and vital signs: Escorts patients to exam rooms, verifying identity with DOB, taking vital signs (height and weight, pulse and blood pressure on every patient, temperatures if patient is sick or complaining of abdominal pain, oxygen saturation if patient is short of breath or complaining of breathing problems.

    Rooming: Thoroughly reviews and updates medication, allergies, social history, safety, health maintenance (personal and family histories for new patients), and pharmacy preference in Epic. Orders/pends RX refills and health maintenance orders as needed. Performs pre-emptive POC testing based on presenting complaint.

    Procedures: Performs procedures in a timely manner (i.e. POC testing, specimen collection, EKG, spirometry, injections, etc.), prompty documenting results/procedure in EPIC as appropriate and correctly labeling all specimens according to lab requirements.

    Inbasket: Checks inbasket for messages throughout the day, making sure all have been addressed at least once before end of day. MAs assigned to physicians call patient results and INR instructions the day they are received into inbasket. Letters are sent out within two days of receiving.

    Stocking/Cleaning: Restocks exam rooms daily at end of day in preparation for next day's patients. Cleans exam rooms according to standard work. Celans exam rooms between patients, making sure new table paper is out, trash has been disposed of and previous supplis used have been put away before new patient is put in room. Replaces sharps containers when they are 2/3 full according to OSHA guidelines. Checks biohazard bags daily, removing as needed. Evening MAs carrout late night duties as directed on Late Night duties checklist.

    Outdates: Checks all vacutainer tubes, swabs, etc. in exam rooms for expiration monthly, ensuring that all equipment/supplies are up-to-date and appropriate for use.

    Personal work area: Keeps a clean, neat, and organized work area conducive for use by other co-workers as needed.

    Scanning: Scans documents daily according to assigned daily quota. Devotes work time not needed for patient care to keep scanning up-to-date.

    Monthly Autoclave Care: Assigned MA diligently carries out autoclave care according to guidelines in Autoclave book.

    OSHA Safety Standards: Follows OSHA guidelines for using personal protective equipment when coming in contact with blood or body fluids (i.e. always wears gloves, masks, gowns, eye shields as appropriate). Always uses safety sharps and disposes of regulated waste and sharps in appropriate receptacles. Doesn't use red bags for regular trash.

    We are committed to helping you grow within Mercy through our Medical Assistant career ladder program. Below are the requirements that will guide you through your Medical Assistant career with Mercy.


    Medical Assistant I

    • High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program
    • or at least one year of applicable patient care experience

    Medical Assistant II

    • High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
    • and/or at least 1 year of experience working as a Medical Assistant

    Medical Assistant III

    • High school diploma or equivalent. Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program and 3 years of experience
    • Certification/Registration is required (RMA or CMA)
