The MLS Student Tech works under the general supervision of the Medical Technologist--Lead and/or Laboratory Director, and assists the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders and in evaluating patient recovery, by performing, analyzing and documenting a variety of microscopic, bacteriologic and/or chemical diagnostic laboratory tests; conducts advanced tests specific to a particular laboratory section, i.e. Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, etc.; performs incidental specimen procurement, preparation and processing.
Leadership: Identifies opportunities to improve patient care delivery. Enhances the learning opportunities to other staff and effectively contributes to the orientation of team members and students. Processes and collects data for performance improvement and monitoring outcomes.
Documentation: Ensures that the information is legible, concise, accurate, objective and timely, while meeting hospital standards. Meets all regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Expert Support: Prepares and sets up equipment, testing compounds and the work area in support of clinical laboratory activities. Prioritizes and completes tasks according to urgency within acceptable response times.
Identifies and matches samples with accompanying orders to ensure accuracy of recording and reporting. Collects and/or screens specimens to be used in performing tests, verifying that samples match accompanying orders and that accession numbers correspond to orders. Performs chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic and/or other medical lab tests and examinations using standard techniques and equipment as specified in procedure manuals.
Because you’re committed to excellence, you understand the importance of being properly prepared for your role at Mercy. That’s why you’ll bring to your role the right set of qualifications:
Education: Post-secondary (undergraduate).
Experience: Six months experience as a medical technology student.
Other: Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as analytical and mathematical ability required to analyze and interpret test results, noting abnormatlities and contradictory results, including determination of casualty. Ability to operate various equipment and computers in a clinical lab environment.
