Utilizes the Nursing Process.
1.1 Assesses staffing needs based on acuity of the patient and complexity of the procedure(s).
1.2 Assesses future needs by examining the surgery schedule for the next day at least 4 times a day and at least daily for future schedules.
1.3 Assesses patient care by observation and communication, making rounds every thirty minutes.
1.4 Assesses care delivery for compliance to established OR standards.
1.5 As part of assessment, communicates with appropriate personnel in pre-op, Phase II, and PACU.
1.6 Plans staffing assignments based on assessment of needs of entire surgical services department.
1.7 Plans resolution of problems in staffing and scheduling in current working schedule, for next shift and for future shifts.
1.8 Implements solutions in a timely manner evidenced by schedule conflicts averted
and maintenance of schedule to the degree possible.
1.9 Evaluates results and implements alternate solutions as needed.
1.10 Uses personnel and physician comments to identify perceived scheduling needs
1.11 Steps into the role of circulator as required to facilitate the needs of the department.
Develops and executes daily staffing of the OR to provide individualized quality care
and according to patient care standards.
2.1 Assigns personnel to assure balanced staffing according to patient acuity and complexity of cases.
2.2 Assigns personnel according to their knowledge or knowledge needs.
2.3 Monitors compliance to patient care standards and standards of OR practice by

2.5 Integrates patient care standards, Nursing Department policies and procedures,
and unit specific standards into practice and in supervising the practice of others.
2.6 Manages on-call and vacation schedules as assigned.
3.1 Provides concise effective and accurate verbal and written communications regarding unit operations.
3.2 Meets regularly with leadership to assure continuity of care.
3.3 Delivers a complete verbal report to relief personnel enabling smooth operations
and easing transitions.
3.4 Meets with staff at general meeting regularly. Assists Manager in preparing and
conducting monthly meetings.
3.5 Meets regularly with Manager to communicate needs and progress.
3.6 Posts written assignments and schedules in a timely manner.
3.7 Communicates with physicians and their offices conveying desire to meet their

4.1 Has understanding of budget constraints and monitors compliance in staffing and

Manages the Environment.
5.1 Implements measures to prevent or eliminate risk.

5.3 Provides risk manager with documentation of situations which have or could cause
harm to patient, staff, visitors or the institution.
5.4 Monitors compliance of staff to hospital policies regarding handling hazardous
substances and adherence to universal precautions in delivery of care.
Manages Human Resources.
6.1 Assists Manager in identifying needs in staffing for purposes of interviewing and hiring personnel.
6.2 Assures appropriate core staff according to needs of department.
6.3 Receives requests and complaints regarding staff schedules in a non-defensive
manner, conveying understanding and making decisions objectively.
6.4 Considers vacation requests and pre-planned sick leave objectively and bases
decisions for approval on staffing needs and individual employee needs.
6.5 Assigns and assures completion of shift duties and tasks in addition to case
6.6 Monitors staff behaviors in regards to absenteeism, adhering to posted schedules,
and compliance to policies and procedures established by hospital and department
standards. Follows through with any work improvement plan and disciplinary action
6.7 Completes or assures completion of performance evaluations in the time limits
established by the Human Resources Department.
6.8 Assists with accurate updated employee files, making positive comments as well
as recording any disciplinary action, for use in evaluation of employee performance.
6.9 Consistently builds positive relationships among varying shifts.
Promotes Personal and staff Development.
7.1 Meets annual certification and educational requirements: 1) CPR ; 2) ACLS; 3) Eighteen (18) Educational hours (at least six (6) hours with management focus); National Certification as appropriate and available.
7.2 Has basic understanding of new surgical procedures and equipment and provides
specific staff with appropriate education and technical training to assure adequate staffing resources for new procedures and equipment.
7.3 Participate actively in peer group meetings.
7.4 Promotes staff development: Assesses learning needs, communicates needs to
Education Coordinator. Provides opportunities to staff to attend educational functions.
Presents at least one inservice annually.
7.5 Represents Mercy Oklahoma City at community and hospital functions.
7.6 Serves as a role model for staff, reflecting the philosophies of Mercy and the
department related to work and service.

Education: Bachelors Degree preferred
Licensure: State of OKlahoma Registred Nurse License
Experience: Min of 3 years OR experience
