    The Laboratory Support Technician (LST III) is part of the provider care team acting in a support capacity for reports, data and scheduling functions of the laboratory. This position is responsible for accurate, timely and effective provision of laboratory support mechanisms. The LST III will be required to exhibit excellent customer service skills in line with the Mercy Signature Service Standards with all customer interactions. The LST III is responsible for the skillful acquisition of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing utilizing safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies as required. The LST III will be responsible for all processing, transport and referral of all types of laboratory specimens and reports as required. The LST III is responsible for limited laboratory testing and for assisting technologists in all appropriate test methods as required.

    Operational Effectiveness

    •Demonstrates effective computer skills for both electronic communication and data management.
    •Creates and uses work aid documents as needed.
    •Organizes, prioritizes and completes work to meet defined turnaround time and expectations.
    •Assesses issues that arise and communicates to appropriate stakeholders for resolution as required.
    •Participates in effective inventory control as needed.
    •Participates in all levels of client services, as required, including registration and order entry.
    •Performs, in accordance with departmental and regulatory standards, effective and timely acquisition, labeling, transfer, and referral of all appropriate laboratory specimens as required.
    •Demonstrates responsibility for timely, effective and accurate processing and reporting of post-analytical laboratory results as required.
    •Participates in training and education of others as requested.
    •Attends department, laboratory and Mercy system meetings as required.
    •Utilizes safe, accurate, effective, professional methodologies while observing HIPAA confidentiality requirements and lab policies.
    •Assists with processing of specimens and reports in laboratory areas as required.
    •Utilizes timely and effective communication skills in line with the Mercy Service Standards to address the needs of all customer groups in support of patient service excellence
    •Resolves billing issues as required.
    •Performs and assists with limited routine laboratory testing as required.
    •Prepares and maintains reagents and solutions as required.
    •Assists technologists in all appropriate test methods as required.
    •Performs other duties as required.

    •Communicates professionally and effectively. Communicates in all fashions using a well modulated voice (face to face and on the phone), tone (e-mail) in a concise, positive and respectful manner.
    •Displays a spirit of cooperation and concern for all patients, fellow staff members, and providers.
    •Demonstrates initiative to assist the laboratory and supportive areas where needed.
    •Participates in continuing education and staff developmental activities.


    •Demonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility according to CMS guidelines and Mercy requirements.
    •Reviews and reports laboratory tests, as required, under the direction of laboratory leadership.
    •Communicates and documents critical information according to the established policies and procedures.
    •Recognizes, reports, and engages in opportunities for process improvement.
    •Complies with all safety regulations and requirements. (i.e. chemical hygiene plan, exposure control plan, blood borne pathogens).

    Performs duties pertaining to the handling and disposition of site-generated hazardous waste as part of daily job activities. 


    Comply with all Federal, State, and Local authorities having jurisdiction. 

    Continuing Education

    •10 CE units annually
    •Completes mandatory courses on time

    Education: High School diploma or equivalent
    Experience: One year phlebotomy or clinical laboratory experience. Previous Mercy LST II designation or equivalency.
    Other: The LST III position must satisfactorily complete the specific facility competencies, including but not limited to checklist, written examination, management observation, etc., to be eligible for advancement to the next higher job description. Have no active disciplinary actions or active performance improvement plans Successfully complete the probationary period
    Preferred Education: College level chemistry, Biology or other Science courses
    Preferred Licensure:
    Preferred Experience: More than one year previous experience in a clinical laboratory
